Longtime Secretary of State Doug La Follette won today’s primary election against newcomer Dane County Dem Party Chair Alexia Sabor, according to the Associated Press.
La Follette had 63 percent of the vote against Sabor’s 37 points with 35 percent of precincts reporting.
In an interview with WisPolitics.com, he said he’s happy to win another round.
“It’s always good to win an election,” he said.
La Follette has held the position since 1983 and he served one term before taking office that year from 1975-1979. Though he raised $21,335 since the start of the year, La Follette spent just $86.24 in July, which contributed to the $3,328 he spent all year. He has $23,411 in cash on hand.
La Follette also spent several weeks in Africa during the summer months, which is normally when candidates knock on doors to garner support.
He also said he still won’t be holding any in-person campaign events — including door-knocking — because he doesn’t want to risk getting or spreading COVID-19.
He ended the conversation saying he’s now only focused one on thing: “One issue, that’s protecting the election integrity and making sure Republicans cannot somehow fiddle with the results of elections in Wisconsin,” he said.
Sabor in a concession statement on Twitter offered her thoughts.
“This has been an incredible journey, and I wish the best to the entire Democratic ticket in November,” she said. “I will continue to work to re-elect Governor Evers and Attorney General Kaul, end Ron Johnson’s career, and champion democracy from Kenosha to Bayfield.”
Sabor raised $24,591 and spent $10,720 since the start of the year, landing $13,871 in her warchest.
Both have outstanding loans. La Follette had $93,500 and Sabor, $3,000.
