A three-year-old boy was fatally struck in the head while in the back seat of his mother’s SUV Friday night in the West Lawn neighborhood, police said.

Around 8:38 p.m. Friday, Chicago Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 4400 block of West Marquette Road, according to a police department media notification.

The woman was driving an SUV when someone in the back seat of a red car fired shots, police said. The woman’s three-year old son was struck in the head and was driven to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition, police said.

He was later pronounced dead, according to police. His name was not released.

Three other children were in the SUV but no other injuries were reported. A spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department said the victim was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle.

The shooter’s vehicle is possible a red Charger or Mustang, but no arrests have been made.

Area One detectives are investigating.
