iOS 16, the next major iPhone operating system update, will be adding native support for the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons and Switch Pro Controller.
Spotted by iOS developer Riley Testut, who shared on his Twitter account that iOS 16 is confirmed to support both the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Joy-Cons. Testut even confirmed in a separate tweet that you could also connect a single Joy-Con to a phone with iOS 16 installed if you wanted to. Testut noted that the Pro Controller, in particular, worked “perfectly” when he tested it.
Additionally, Nat Brown, an engineering manager at Apple, also confirmed the support for both controllers. More interestingly, Brown shared information on how to switch between single and dual Joy-Cons on iOS 16, and all you would need to do is hold the screenshot and home buttons for several seconds to make the swap.
9to5Mac confirmed that iOS 16’s internal code allows for the next major iPhone update to support multiple game controllers, with the outlet saying it tested controllers such as the Logitech F710 Gamepad. It further notes that third-party controller support on iOS is based on “mobile assets,” which 9to5Mac says would make it easier for Apple to support more controllers without releasing a new update of the iPhone operating system.
The Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers will join the likes of other official controllers made by Nintendo’s competitors, PlayStation and Xbox. Both sets of controllers have been supported on iPhones and iPads since the iOS 14.5 update.
iOS 16 was announced yesterday as one of many announcements at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) keynote. Some other noteworthy features coming to iOS 16 include the option to customize your lock screen with widgets and edit or even unsend a message.
iOS 16 will be available as a public beta next month, while an official release is expected for some time this fall and will be compatible with iPhones, starting with the iPhone 8 and newer models such as the iPhone XR and iPhone 13.
