In 1857, a group of conservative men determined that the Constitution allowed slave owners the right to move their slaves with impunity to states or territories that had outlawed slavery. This decision was made in spite of a majority of Americans’ disagreement with the spread of this human trafficking. Three years later, the minority of Americans who agreed with this decision felt emboldened and started the most violent insurrection in our history. For those unfamiliar with these events, please review Dred Scott v. Sanford.
Now, 165 years have passed and another out-of-touch group of conservative men and one religious zealot woman have told American women that they cannot have autonomy over their own bodies. This decision is as out of touch with American values as was the 1857 decision regarding slavery. Just as the spread of slavery was abhorrent to most Americans in 1857, the Supreme Court’s attempt at controlling female bodily functions is abhorrent to the majority of current Americans.
Where will this decision lead? Hopefully, it will lead to American voters utilizing the power of their vote to change this awful decision rather than an emboldened minority creating yet another insurrection.
