INDIANAPOLIS — No one was injured, but 12 residents are displaced after a fire Thursday at a downtown Indianapolis apartment complex, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.
Shortly before 1 p.m., crews were called to The Congress at Library Square apartments located at 900 N. Meridian Street.
It took about an hour for firefighters to get the fire under control.
IFD explained that the fire started on the fifth floor of the building and spread to the roof, where crews found heavy fire on the roof deck and in a utility shed.
An occupant on the fifth floor told investigators that she heard a popping noise, looked into the hallway and saw smoke. She then heard several more popping noises and evacuated, per IFD. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
IFD said while all occupants evacuated on their own, crews did rescue three cats and two dogs. In all, 40 units were affected by water damage from the sprinkler system.
The fire department is working with apartment management and the Red Cross to find shelter for those displaced.
It appears the fire interrupted the popular Pat McAfee Show, hosted by former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee. In a post on Twitter, McAfee said the fire department “cut off ALL POWER to our office in the middle of our show due to a fire in the apartment building next door.”
