Tasting menu-centric Friday Saturday Sunday and meat purveyor Heavy Metal Sausage Co. are among the Philly-based destinations on the list of semifinalists for the prestigious James Beard Awards, a major honor signifying excellence in the restaurant industry.

Friday Saturday Sunday got recognized in the category of outstanding restaurant, while Heavy Metal Sausage is in the best new restaurant category. Amanda Shulman of the family-style Her Place Supper Club is a contender for the emerging chef award. Ellen Yin of High Street Hospitality Group (Fork, High Street Philly, etc.) is in the running for the best restaurateur category.

On the baked goods front, family-owned Denise’s Delicacies and sourdough stars Mighty Bread Co. received nods in the outstanding bakery category, and Emily Riddell of pastry favorite Machine Shop is a semifinalist for outstanding pastry chef or baker (also Eater’s Best Bakery winner in 2022).

The eponymous Vernick Food & Drink got a mention in the outstanding hospitality category, while Belgian spot Monk’s Cafe was on the list for outstanding wine or beverage program. The wine bar Le Caveau is on the list for outstanding bar.

Several Philadelphia chefs will face off in the outstanding chef, Mid-Atlantic category, including Andrew Henshaw of critical favorite Laser Wolf, Jesse Ito of Japanese hot spot Royal Sushi & Izakaya, Dionicio Jiménez of Mexican newcomer Cantina La Martina, Thanh Nguyen of Gabriella’s Vietnam (a 2021 Eater Award winner), and Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon of Thai destination Kalaya (Eater’s 2019 Restaurant of the Year).

Though the narrowed-down list of James Beard nominations will be revealed when the selection committee releases finalists on Wednesday, March 29, appearing on the so-called “long list” is still considered an honor throughout the industry. A gala for the eventual award winners will take place in Chicago on Monday, June 5.

Philly’s Cristina Martinez of South Philly Barbacoa and Casa Mexico won the award for best chef, Mid-Atlantic last year; three other local industry members were finalists. Corinne’s Place, a longtime soul food restaurant in Camden founded by Corinne Bradley-Powers, was one of six winners in the America’s Classics category.
