After months of search efforts and investigations, police said Thursday that Alexis Gabe, the Bay Area woman who went missing in late January with her car keys still in the ignition, was likely killed.
During a press conference Thursday morning, Oakley police Chief Paul Beard said that she was likely killed by her ex-boyfriend, 27-year-old Antioch resident Marshall Curtis Jones.
“We believe that Alexis Gabe is the victim of a homicide,” Beard said. “We believe the homicide occurred in the city of Antioch.”
The other stunning revelation announced during the press conference: Jones was shot and killed by federal officers in Kent, Washington, on Wednesday after they served him an arrest warrant. Beard said that he came out of the Kent home charging at officers with a knife.
“The death of Marshall Jones is not what we had hoped for, but we do hope somebody who has knowledge of Alexis’ whereabouts will now feel more empowered to come forward without having to feel a negative response from Marshall Jones,” Beard said.
Alexis Gabe was reported missing Jan. 27 and was reportedly last seen the night before at about 9 p.m. at her ex-boyfriend’s home in Antioch. In addition to the keys in the ignition, her car door was also left open.
Shortly after her disappearance and presumed homicide, Beard said, Jones fled to the state of Washington, where he has personal ties.
While there is no official confirmation of how she was killed — or even Jones’ motivation — Beard said “the totality of this investigation” led Oakley and Antioch police to Gabe’s death.
Among the evidence Oakley police found was a cellphone case found near Jones’ Antioch home. The case belonged to Gabe, Beard said, and it had Jones’ DNA on it. Additionally, local surveillance footage and GPS data from Gabe’s vehicle was considered proof of Gabe’s homicide.
Gabe’s phone and financial records also revealed “no evidence of life,” Beard added.
Despite police searching what was reported to be Jones’ home in the days after her disappearance, he was “very uncooperative” throughout the investigation, said Beard, refusing to speak with officials on several occasions.
Gwyn Gabe, Alexis’ father, spoke to the intimacy of his daughter’s relationship with Jones, calling him “our daughter’s first love.”
“He became part of our family,” he said. “We had no idea he was capable of doing something like this to her. We didn’t want him dead; we wanted him arrested to pay for his sins. We wanted to meet with him face-to-face.”
A $100,000 reward is available for anyone with information that could lead Oakley police to Gabe’s body.
“I know the police are saying that our daughter is gone, but our daughter will remain in our minds and in our hearts,” said Gwyn Gabe. “We will continue to search for her until we find her.”
