A missing San Jose man was found dead Sunday in the Stanislaus National Forest, Mother Lode reported.
According to the outlet, on May 29, a hiker discovered 28-year-old Devin Brewer’s body in the water by God’s Bath, a popular swimming hole on the Clavey River. Brewer was first reported missing in mid-May when he dove in but didn’t resurface. While the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office still hasn’t declared an official cause of death, they believe he got swept away by the strong current. The outlet reported conditions were so hostile at the time that the search operation was suspended and divers had to wait for waters to slow down before attempting to locate Brewer.
“Given the fast-moving current and the rocky conditions, there is a possibility he could be stuck under a rock. If that’s the case, it’s just too dangerous because of the conditions,” Tuolumne County Sheriff’s spokesperson Jacob Ostoich told Mother Lode.
This isn’t the first time people have died at the idyllic swimming hole.
Last year, Benedict Rozario, 20, of Pittsburg and Rinoel Villena, 25, of Daly City were identified as two God’s Bath drowning victims. Swept away by the current, it took two days to recover their bodies.
“As the weather gets hot and the rivers run fast, we want to remind you that rivers are inherently dangerous places to recreate,” the Tuolumne County Fire Department posted on Instagram. “The water can be high, swift and cold as mountain snowpack melts, making staying in control and hypothermia real risks. Logs and rocks, both visible and hidden, pose navigation hazards.”
