A 32-year-old masked man was arrested Saturday in the San Francisco Bay Area after allegedly pointing a firearm at a neighbor, officials said.

Officers were called to the scene on the 100 block of Ladera Drive in Vallejo after a neighbor said the man was wearing a gas mask and pointing a gun at him, the Vallejo Police Department said. Officers responded just after 12:30 p.m., Sgt. Rashad Hollis told SFGATE.

The suspect was standing approximately 10 feet from the neighbor as he pointed the gun, Hollis said. The suspect allegedly pulled the trigger as he pointed the gun, but it didn’t fire, officials said.

Hollis said there was a prior call to the department from a different person regarding two shots being fired in the air; officers confirmed this was related to the earlier report of a gun threat.

Officers on the scene asked the suspect to surrender but he didn’t comply, Hollis said.

During the approximately 15-minute standoff, the suspect cursed at the officers and allegedly refused orders to surrender as he hid in his garage behind a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, Hollis said.

Hollis said he “distracted” the suspect by revealing himself from behind a vehicle; another officer simultaneously went behind the house and tackled the suspect.

Five officers assisted in taking the gun from the suspect as he resisted, the department said.

The man was booked into Solano County Jail, officials said.

The department is still investigating the cause of the conflict, Hollis said.

“I don’t know if he was under the influence or just having a mental breakdown, everything was just so tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving,” Hollis said.
