A Lombard police officer was hospitalized after responding to an armed robbery at a retail store Thursday afternoon that led to a shootout with the two men involved, the village of Lombard said in a statement.

Lombard police responded to the armed robbery at the store on the 0-100 block of West Roosevelt Road around 4:05 p.m., the statement said. Officers encountered the two men in the area of Ann and Lincoln streets, and one of the men opened fire on the officers, according to the preliminary investigation.

Officers shot back, the statement said, and one officer and one of the men involved in the robbery were hit. Both were taken to an area hospital.

The suspect was later pronounced dead, according to the statement. The officer was undergoing surgery for his injuries as of late Thursday. As of Friday morning, he was said to be in stable condition and still at the hospital.

The second man involved in the robbery was taken into custody, and charges are pending, the statement said.

The DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (MERIT), the Public Integrity Unit, and the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office were notified of the officer-involved shooting and have opened an independent investigation into the shooting, according to the statement.
