Officers investigating a robbery exchanged gunfire with a man Thursday night during a car chase, according to Metro Police.

Officers were conducting a follow-up investigation into a robbery earlier this year when an air unit conducting surveillance on the suspect about 7:10 p.m. saw him steal a vehicle at gunpoint, police said.

Patrol officers initiated a vehicle pursuit and were in the area of East Craig Road and North Fifth Street when the suspect fired at the officers, police said. The officers returned fire, police said.

The pursuit continued to the area of West Desert Inn Road and South Decatur Boulevard, where the suspect tried to steal another vehicle at gunpoint in a parking lot, police said.

Officers fired at the suspect, and the chase continued to the area of Decatur and Charleston boulevards, where the suspect collided with a Metro vehicle, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to University Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

The officer in the Metro vehicle was also transported to UMC with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

Earlier in the pursuit, a second officer was involved in a crash and was taken to UMC with minor injuries, police said.

The incident was the seventh officer-involved shooting this year. Per Metro policy, the identity of the officers involved will be released after 48 hours.
