Highland Park shooting suspect to appear in bond court

Highland Park shooting suspect Robert Crimo III will likely make his first court appearance Wednesday, a day after being charged with seven counts of first-degree murder.

The 22-year-old is scheduled to be at an Illinois bond court at 10 a.m. local time, according to ABC7 Chicago.

During the court appearance, prosecutors are expected to request that Crimo remain in custody without bond.

Seven people were killed and dozens more were wounded in the shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park on Monday.

“These are just the first of many charges that will be filed against Mr. Crimo,” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said Tuesday in announcing the seven murder counts. “There will be dozens of more charges against Mr. Crimo.”

Rinehart says a conviction would come with a mandatory life sentence for Crimo, who wouldn’t be eligible for parole.

Crimo was taken into custody on Monday, hours after the shooting, with prosecutors claiming he’d dressed as a woman and covered his facial tattoos in an attempt to disguise himself.

On Tuesday, Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering said on NBC’s “Today” show that the rifle used in the shooting was legally obtained.

“I think at some point, this nation needs to have a conversation about these weekly events involving the murder of dozens of people with legally obtained guns,” Rotering said. “If that’s what our laws stand for, we need to re-examine the laws.”

Highland Park is an affluent suburb of Chicago, located about 30 miles north of the city.
