Multiple headstones knocked over by woman learning to drive at cemetery

Multiple headstones at a cemetery have been damaged after they were knocked over by a driver with a learner’s permit, according to police in the Massachusetts city.Melrose police Chief Michael Lyle said the officers learned that the vehicle involved, an older model Range Rover, crashed into eight headstones in the cemetery and knocked eight of them over.According to the police chief, the driver, a 53-year-old woman with her learner’s permit, was practicing driving at the time of the crash. That woman was accompanied by a relative who is a licensed operator.Both the woman and her relative, who have not been identified, were not injured, Lyle said.Several of the headstones that were struck by the vehicle sustained damage, but Lyle said all of them were successfully uprighted by members of the Melrose Department of Public Works.A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to strike the headstones.Lyle said the crash is being investigated further by the Melrose Police Department.
