INDIANAPOLIS — With the Indianapolis 500 making Central Indiana the center of Memorial Day festivities, an east side family celebrate the holiday weekend with some backyard racing, what they call the “greatest spectacle in backyard racing.”
On Monday, members of the Guynn family hosted their annual backyard race at the Guynn Raceway on the east side of Indianapolis. The race is in its 34th year, pitting family members against each other.
This year’s race consisted of nine vehicles. Similar to this year’s running of the Indianapolis 500, participants ran into some issues with concerns that the mechanical cars would get overheated. This concern limited this year’s race to 200 laps instead of the normal 500 laps.
This year’s winner was 12-year-old Aidan Everett, the youngest winner of the race in three decades.
“It was very difficult,” Everett said, “but I pushed through it. I won.”
As the winner of this year’s race, Everett received a trophy, $100 and, most importantly, bragging rights.
But even the winner of this year’s race is already looking ahead to the next one.
“I think I had a lot of weird turns, spirals to work on for next year,” he said. “I have bragging rights, y’all hear that.”
