MUSIC

The Atlanta Opera and Alliance Theatre have started off their seasons with a hit on their hands with the collaboration on The Shining, an opera based on the Stephen King novel. The production runs through October 1 at the Alliance, and an extra performance has been added on September 29. Some shows have already sold out, and others have limited tickets available. Texas honky-tonk hero Dale Watson’s latest album, Starvation Box, takes a deep dive into Watson’s classic “real country” sound with plenty of acoustic guitars and Dobros and cry-in-your-beer songs. Watson was part of the cast of the Stephen King-John Mellencamp musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County that debuted at the Alliance Theatre in 2012. Watson performs Sunday at Eddie’s Attic at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets are $34.49.

THEATER

That Serious He-Man Ball opened at True Colors Theatre this week, directed by Eric J. Little and starring longtime friends Eugene H. Russell IV, Neal Ghant and Enoch King. True Colors founder Kenny Leon starred in a 1988 production alongside Tom Jones and Tony Vaughn, making He-Man Ball a fitting launch for the theater’s 20th season. An accompanying event, Meditations on That Serious He-Man Ball, will take place at the Five Points MARTA Station next Tuesday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. This special performance includes original songs and spoken word poems created by the cast. Free.

Dad's Garage

Travis Sharp and Haddon Kime’s original scripted musical, Wicket, is remastered and coming back to the Dad’s Garage stage after a successful nationwide tour. Through song and dance, the performance rewrites a classic Star Wars tale from an Ewok’s perspective with all the laughs you would expect from Dad’s. The show runs Thursdays through Sundays at 8 p.m. through October 21. Tickets start at $39.

Troilus and Cressida — the bard’s unique spin on the Helen of Troy story — is on stage at Shakespeare Tavern through Sunday. In his recent review, ArtsATL critic Luke Evans calls the performances “spot on,” and praises the play’s “emotionally-charged tension and side-splitting hilarity” as well as the “arguably feminist message coded into its romantic conflict.” Tickets start at $40 with discounts available.

FILM+TV

Out on Film kicks off this evening (Thursday) and lasts through October 1, opening with Bill Oliver’s drama Our Son. The full lineup of the award-winning LGBTQ film festival includes 44 features and 15 shorts programs for a total of 151 films representing 27 countries. Screenings take place at Landmark Midtown Art Cinema and various other local spots, so check show details. Celebrate and remember the life and legacy of George Lefont this Saturday at noon at the Plaza Theatre. Lefont opened a number of arthouse cinemas in the Atlanta area — including the Plaza and the recently revived Tara — investing in the local love for film for years to come.

ART+DESIGN

UTA Artist Space Atlanta presents Some Believe It To Be Conspiracy, a solo exhibition by conceptual artist Emmanuel Massillon. The exhibit opens Friday and features 13 new sculptures addressing issues that deeply impact the Black community, such as the manipulation of Black culture and distrust of the medical system. Massillon incorporates into his work found objects such as bullet shells and wood, creating connections between race, identity and culture. Through October 21.

The artists in the current group show at Spalding Nix Fine Art examine various types of  Entanglements — with ourselves, each other and the natural world. Married couple Carlyle Wolfe Lee and Thad Lee present a body of work of painting and photography made in tandem. Spencer Sloan manipulates paparazzi photos into digital abstractions, exploring the concept of celebrity obsessions, and Virginie Drujon-Kippelen examines the complicated connections that exist in our disturbed urban landscapes. Jamaal Barber, Melissa Huang, Diane Hiscox and Jess Self all received their Masters of Fine Arts from Georgia State University. This weekend each of them has a solo exhibit opening at Echo Contemporary Art. The reception is Friday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Free, but reservations recommended. Cocktails and edibles available.

September Gray Fine Art Gallery moved earlier this year and is opening its new space in the Old Fourth Ward with Connections: A Key To Something Else, an exhibit of Shirley Woodson’s work. Woodson, a long-time activist and educator, offers a unique perspective of women, family and voices of the ancestors. She brings their lives and dreams to life with her strong use of color and explores themes of water, movement and the strength of both historical and contemporary women. The opening is Friday, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., followed by an artist talk on Saturday at 4 p.m. Through October 27.

BOOKS

Thomas Smallwood was a slave who bought his own freedom in the 1840s, and then helped hundreds escape slavery. Smallwood documented the escapes in satirical newspaper columns that mocked slaveholders, slave traders and the police who worked for them. Flee North, the new book by Pulitzer Prize winner Scott Shane, tells the story of Smallwood. Shane will discuss the book September 21 at 7 p.m. at the Atlanta History Center as part of its Author Talks series. Tickets start at $5 for members, $10 for non-members.
