Hooray for Brian Greenspun’s May 22 column, “Americans must reject those who would replace us,” in which he recognizes that it has never been OK for political or religious leaders to rationalize unpatriotic behavior by those who take up arms against their fellow citizens for no good reason.
Recognizing such vile and cowardly conduct as using an military-style gun to massacre 10 innocent supermarket patrons, Greenspun opined that all politicians, like former President Donald Trump, who in 2017 said white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va., were “very fine people,” should be soundly rejected by voters as if our life and the life of our democracy depend on it.
Democracy is not served by cowardly gunmen brandishing weapons of war to massacre fellow citizens, or by politicians who provide encouragement for such conduct.
Democracy was and still is served by heroes like the late Martin Luther King Jr., who dedicated his life to the principles of democracy, justice and equality.
Please vote in the midterm elections and all future elections as if your life depends on it, for as Rev. King stated, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter” and “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.”
