MANILA, Philippines-Far Eastern University unleashed a barrage of three-pointers late in the game to turn back La Salle, 67-62, and notch a third straight victory Tuesday in the UAAP Season 84 men’s basketball at Mall of Asia Arena.
Tamaraws’ Xyrus Torres, RJ Abarrientos and Patrick Sleat banged in from the arc in succession to put a decisive stop to the Archers’ second-half rally and ensure their sixth win in 12 games.
The Archers fell to their second straight defeat for a 7-5 record.
La Salle came back from 16 points down, 42-26, late in the second to tie the match 42-all on a slam dunk by 6-foot-9 Nigerian Bright Nwankwo late in the third.
But right after La Salle centre Mike Phillips made it 57-57 in the final two minutes and 44 seconds, FEU set off the cluster bomb that suddenly turned things for the Tamaraws, 66-59, 58 seconds to go.
Abarrientos scored 13 of his 21 points in the first quarter, typifying the Tamaraws’ vaunted run-and-gun style. Torres added 14.
