TANK to buy more hybrid-electric buses thanks to new grant funding

A new grant is paving the way for new, low-emission buses in Northern Kentucky.The Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky, also known as TANK, announced they received $3.1 million in grant funds from the Federal Transit Administration.The funds will be used to buy hybrid-electric buses that will replace their aging transit buses.“TANK’s mission is to provide safe, reliable transit services to the people of Northern Kentucky, while keeping abreast of technology and working to use resources in a responsible way,” TANK Interim General Manager Gina Douthat said in a statement. “Federal funds like these are critical in driving that mission and allowing us to continue to provide reliable and sustainable public transportation to our community.”Since hybrid-electric buses cost around $300,000 more than standard diesel, the grant money will specifically allow TANK to upgrade their new bus purchases to be hybrid-electric.
