INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man has had his federal prison extended after he admitted to attempting to escape from federal custody, according to officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana.
Officials said that 23-year-old Jaylen Brancheau was sentenced to an additional 16 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of escape from federal custody.
This comes after Brancheau was sentenced in October 2020 to 60 months and one day in federal prison after he was convicted of one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
The office said the new sentence will be served consecutively to Brancheau’s remaining state sentence.
According to previous reports, Brancheau was arrested in July 2023 after he was located in a car that was pulled over after a pursuit. Officials said that Brancheau exited the car during the traffic stop and fled into a nearby cornfield.
Brancheau was then detained without incident.
Officials said that Brancheau was then transferred to a residential reentry center to complete his sentence in October 2022.
In July 2023, Brancheau was reportedly granted a church pass and did not return. Officials said Brancheau was located and arrested in Blackford County on a state warrant for resisting law enforcement and reckless driving.
Officials said that Brancheau will serve three years probation after he is released from federal prison.
