MANILA, Philippines—The Senate hailed Filipino middleweight prospect Eumir Marcial for picking up his third and fourth straight victories in the professional ranks.
The upper chamber adopted during Monday’s plenary session Senate Resolution Nos. 494 and 256, congratulating and commending Marcial, who totes a record of 4-0, with 2 knockouts.
“Indeed, Eumir, once again, showcased to the world the exceptional skills and talent of the Filipino athlete,” Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva said as he sponsored the resolutions.
“Isa po siyang inspirasyon, hindi lang sa ating mga Pilipino [at] mga kapwa niya boksingero, kundi po sa mga libo-libong atleta at milyong-milyong kabataang Pilipino na nagsisikap makamit ang kanilang pangarap,” he added.
(He is an inspiration not only to Filipinos and fellow boxers but also to thousands of athletes and millions of Filipino youth that strive to achieve their dreams.)
The 27-year-old Marcial scored a second-round stoppage over Ricardo Villalba of Argentina last month at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. His latest victory came just four months after he hacked out a unanimous decision win over Steven Pichardo.
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, the chairperson of the Senate committee on sports, likewise lauded Marcial and reassured his support for Filipino athletes.
“Your unwavering determination and dedication have set a remarkable example for all of us, demonstrating what can be achieved through hard work and perseverance,” Go said.
Marcial, who hails from Zamboanga City, was conferred with the Philippine Senate Medal of Excellence in 2021 for clinching the bronze medal in the men’s middleweight boxing division at the Tokyo Olympics.
