HANOI, Vietnam—Reigning US Open champion Carlo Biado held his ground to edge Darry Chia of Malaysia 9-7 on Saturday and advance to the men’s 9-ball singles quarterfinals in the 31st Southeast Asian Games here.

After taking a comfortable 8-3 lead, Biado, 38, missed the seven-ball on the lower left-hand pocket that led to Chia notching four straight racks.

Biado, the 2017 singles champion in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, eventually returned to the table and closed out the match, avoiding what could have been a stunning exit.

Another Filipino in Jeffrey Roda reached the last eight of the men’s snooker 6-red singles, outlasting Nguyen Pham Hoai of Vietnam, 5-4.
