“Memorial Day is meant to focus on the sacrifices that veterans gave while fighting and serving for freedom,” said Ray Coleman, director of communications at Mississippi Veterans Affairs, of Memorial Day. “This is different from Veterans Day where we honor those still alive that served our country. We also encourage all Mississippians to visit War Memorials located across the state to honor and remember the fallen.”
At 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, the Mississippi Veterans Affairs will host memorial ceremonies at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemeteries at Newton and Kilmichael, he said.
“At 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, we ask that everyone join in the national tradition of participating in a moment of silence to pay tribute to America’s fallen heroes,” Coleman said. “Also the World War I Memorial Building in downtown Jackson is dedicated to those who honorably died while fighting in war.”
