How researchers are using ChatGPT

Around 80% of respondents to an online Nature survey have used ChatGPT or a similar artificial intelligence (AI) tool at least once — and 8% say they use one every day. Fifty-seven per cent use conversational AIs for “creative fun not related to research” but around 16% each are using them to help write research manuscripts, produce presentations or conduct literature reviews.

Russia’s shifting scientific collaborations

Russia’s war on Ukraine might be starting to change global research collaborations. An analysis of co-authorship patterns in papers indexed in the Scopus database suggests that, in 2022, an increased share of Russia’s internationally collaborative papers had co-authors from China and India, whereas the proportion co-written with US or German authors fell from the previous year. Many research organizations cut collaboration activities with Russia shortly after it invaded Ukraine.

Impacts of farmed salmon and chicken

Globally, production of chicken is more environmentally efficient than that of salmon, according to a study of industrial farming. Overall, chicken farms cause more habitat disturbance and nutrient pollution than do salmon farms, but they yield 55 times more product. That’s partly because chickens take 6–8 weeks to reach the size at which they are slaughtered, whereas salmon take 1–2 years. Both salmon and chicken are better for the planet than many other meat products, the authors of the study say.
