The College of the Arts congratulates Dr. Alessandra Raengo, a professor from the School of Film, Media & Theatre, on her appointment as Distinguished University Professor, one of the university’s highest distinctions. “The College of the Arts is fortunate to have a scholar of Dr. Raengo’s caliber on our faculty,” said Dean Wade Weast. “Her research and creative activities enrich not only her students but the entire university community as well, and we are pleased to see her significant accomplishments celebrated by Georgia State.”

Dr. Raengo is a theorist of black aesthetics and visual culture, working at the intersection of Black Studies, Visual Culture Studies, Film Studies, Art History and Aesthetic Theory. Recently, she served as co-lead for the inaugural Ferrer Visiting Artist micro-residency with artist/filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson, organizing master classes and virtual film screenings to introduce students to both the artist and his work.

“Alessandra Raengo is distinguished in every way: as a scholar, teacher, mentor, and innovator,” said Director Greg Smith. “We are delighted that the university sees what we in the School of Film, Media & Theatre see in Dr. Raengo every day: that she is a model citizen of Georgia State and the larger academic community.”

Dr. Raengo is the Founding Editor in Chief of the liquid blackness: journal of aesthetics and black studies, which began publishing with Duke University Press in 2021. The Duke UP journal is an outgrowth of the liquid blackness research group and journal she established in 2013 in the Moving Images Studies doctoral program; both are devoted to the study of the radical aesthetic possibilities of the visual and sonic arts of the Black diaspora. Under her leadership, “liquid blackness” developed into a multi-pronged project: a theoretical concept, a methodology, a pedagogy, an archival project, a digital humanities initiative archived at the Library of Congress, a curatorial practice and a praxis of community-building. In addition to her appointment as Distinguished University Professor, Dr. Raengo is a Fall 2022 recipient of Senior Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts associated with the National Gallery in Washington, DC.

The appointment of Distinguished University Professor at Georgia State is intended to recognize a sustained and outstanding record in scholarship and instruction and to provide the impetus for continuing high achievement. Distinguished University Professors serve the university as exemplary faculty members by contributing to its research, instructional and service missions.
