Whenever Phipps Conservatory features a famous painter as the focal point for a flower show, you know you’re going to be in for a good time.
2022’s Summer Flower Show does just that with its theme “Monet in Bloom” and features floral recreations of some of the master’s top works (next to copies of the paintings themselves for reference), quotes from the artist, themed sound elements, and more!
As with all of our museum posts, we do not like to give away every exhibit. In this one, we’re only going to share a few of our favorite rooms and encourage you to visit to see the rest!
The Sunken Garden
The Sunken Garden really runs the spectrum as far as flower show exhibits are concerned. Sometimes the room is sleek and simple and other times it is over-the-top elaborate. For “Monet in Bloom”, it most certainly feels like the latter.
Why? This room recreates “The Saint-Lazare Station” and features a monster train complete with billowing steam (in the form of hanging baskets), a sound element, and of course many, many gorgeous flowers everywhere you look!
The East Room
The East Room is always a favorite of ours purely because it is one of just a few rooms at the conservatory whose designs are meant to be appreciated at a distance. For the Summer Flower Show, this one is a bit different.
The room this year features Monet’s “Luncheon Under the Canopy” and gives you a seat at the table, literally, to get into the painting outright. This is the first time we have seen an interactive scene like this in the East Room and it was a fun take on this classic painting.
The Victoria Room
The Victoria Room features Monet’s “Studio Boat” floating in the center pond while surrounded by gorgeous plants and foliage. Beyond the painting itself, here you’ll learn about how Monet frequently worked in his own boat and you can see artist tools and equipment in this one.
This exhibit also takes advantage of the 360-degree walkway around the pond and allows for different vantage points into the boat itself. Be sure to pay close attention as some elements are only visible from certain directions!
The Stove Room
Finally, as with every Summer Flower Show, you’ll do well to spend some time in The Stove Room. Much like other shows, this one is never updated to feature art for the themed exhibit. Instead, you’ll be able to walk through and enjoy spotting dozens upon dozens of butterflies!
As this room’s highlight is viewing living creatures, your mileage may vary in how many you see at any given visit. So just be sure to take some time to slowly stroll through this room and look all over to see what you can find. You’ll truly never know when a butterfly will pop out of nowhere!
Overall, 2022’s Summer Flower Show doesn’t disappoint in bringing some of Monet’s classic works to life in flower form. Whether you know all the paintings by heard or are discovering something new, Phipps is sure to dazzle with the depth of this one.
