The Orioles will acknowledge National Gun Violence Awareness Day on Friday and throughout the weekend following recent gun-violence tragedies in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, the team announced in a news release Thursday.
The Orioles will hold a moment of silence before Friday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians in memory of those who have lost their lives to gun violence and to show support for organizations working to enact stricter gun legislation.
The team will light the warehouse on Eutaw Street orange and staff will don orange jerseys during the weekend for Wear Orange Weekend, which began in 2013 after Hadiya Pendleton’s friends wore the color to commemorate her life after she was shot and killed on a Chicago playground.
Additionally, the Orioles Charitable Foundation will match 100% of sales on Orioles Authentics merchandise both online and in the team store during the weekend with donations to Moms Demand Action. The group was founded after the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School and works for public safety measures like strong gun laws and closing loopholes in existing policy.
