Mississippi contestants sing classics on ‘American Idol’ Disney night

And then there were three. Three “American Idol” contestants, that is, after Sunday night’s episode narrowed the Top 5 to the Top 3 and one Mississippi contestant, Colin Stough, is still in the running for next Sunday’s grand finale when a new “American Idol” will be crowned.

Sunday’s episode was Disney night and the Top 5 finalists took a trip to Disneyland and the resort before two contestants were sent home. 

Before host Ryan Seacrest announced which three of the remaining Top 5 contestants earned enough votes to go on to next week’s finale, the Top 5 gave it their all on the show, singing their hearts out for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan as fans voted from home during the live broadcast.

Stough, 18, and Zachariah Smith, 20, both from Monroe County, started Sunday’s competition in the Top 5, alongside Iam Tongi, Wé Ani and Megan Danielle. By the end of the night, Stough, Danielle and Tongi advanced, while Smith and Ani were sent home.

All the finalists chose popular classic Disney songs to sing while judges Bryan, Perry and Richie watched with the crowd. 

Husband and father of three, Smith, performed The Lion King’s “I Just Can’t Wait to be King.”

Smith finished the song in true rock-star fashion, by spinning around and striking a pose that showed off a sequined lion design on the back of his shirt.

“You actually may become king,” Perry said.

“You are on fire my friend,” Richie said.

Stough spent the day at Disneyland with his mom watching fireworks and enjoying the moment. 

“My mom actually signed me up for the competition so it means a lot to me and I want to just give her the world,” Stough said. 

Stough performed “Real Gone” from the movie “Cars.” 

“We been wanting you to get really comfortable all year,” Bryan said. “We didn’t know a ‘Cars’ song would do that and get you to that point, that was great.”
