A man was arrested after allegedly driving into a Phoenix home early Wednesday while impaired, killing a person who was inside.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, detectives booked 38-year-old Aaron Johns on manslaughter after they took over the investigation into an overnight collision into a home that left another man dead.

On August 23, 2023, around 1:00 a.m., officers responded to the area of 5700 South 31st Avenue regarding a collision where a vehicle struck a nearby home. When officers arrived on scene, they found 66-year-old Jose Martinez Aguirre trapped by the vehicle inside of
the home.

Phoenix Fire personnel arrived and extricated Mr. Martinez-Aguirre from under the vehicle and transported him to a local hospital. Martinez Aguirre did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Johns remained on scene.

Detectives believe that Johns was in his vehicle traveling eastbound on Wayland Drive when he lost control of his vehicle striking the residence involved. Mr. Martinez Aguirre was inside of the home when the collision occurred at which time he was trapped under Johns’ vehicle.

Impairment was determined to be a factor in the collision.
