On Thursday July 28, 2022 at approximately 1:15 p.m., Cochise County Sheriff’s deputies attempted a traffic stop on Davis Road mile post 18 on a white Ford Expedition which failed to yield and began travelling at speeds over 100 miles per hour. The deputy disengaged for safety reasons and distributed an attempt to locate for the vehicle.

The attempt to locate which was issued for the vehicle resulted in it being observed heading north on Highway 90 at speeds estimated over 100 miles per hour. Tire deflation devices were deployed on Highway 90 before Interstate 10.

An SUV was turning left at the intersection of Whetstone Commerce Drive and Highway 90 in Benson when the suspect vehicle crashed into it, causing both vehicles to become disabled.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, a female in her 20’s from Tucson, was taken from the vehicle with serious injuries and was airlifted from the scene to a Tucson hospital. A male passenger, unknown age or residence, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene. Two undocumented immigrants who were also in the vehicle were taken out of the vehicle and are injured.

The SUV that was struck by the suspect vehicle resulted in the driver and passenger suffering injuries requiring transport to a local hospital for treatment.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is conducting the investigation.
