Mississippi reported 9,092 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, down 8.9% from the previous week. The previous week had 9,979 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Mississippi ranked 12th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 7.4% from the week before, with 906,593 cases reported. With 0.89% of the country’s population, Mississippi had 1% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 28 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Hinds County reported 948 cases and three deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 974 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 59,277 cases and 804 deaths.
Rankin County reported 599 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 617 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 40,883 cases and 494 deaths.

Madison County reported 363 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 417 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 27,325 cases and 334 deaths.
Holmes County reported 39 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 44 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 4,720 cases and 104 deaths.
Across Mississippi, cases fell in 47 counties, with the best declines in Harrison County, with 716 cases from 831 a week earlier; in Jackson County, with 486 cases from 579; and in Lamar County, with 243 cases from 300.

Within Mississippi, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Pike County with 603 cases per 100,000 per week; Jasper County with 574; and Jones County with 537. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
Adding the most new cases overall were Hinds County, with 948 cases; Harrison County, with 716 cases; and Rankin County, with 599. Weekly case counts rose in 33 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Lauderdale, Monroe and Neshoba counties.

In Mississippi,
45 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 35 people were reported dead.A total of 875,132 people in Mississippi have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 12,648 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 91,316,648 people have tested positive and 1,029,926 people have died.

Hospitals in 24 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 21 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 30 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
