Lakota West survives opener.NO. 1 LAKOTA WEST 16, NO. 5 ST. XAVIER 13Lakota West rallied to defeat St. Xavier by a score of 16-13 in front of more than 4,900 fans in West Chester on Friday night.After trailing 13-0, the Firebirds made a furious second half comeback capped off by a five yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mitch Bolden to Notre Dame commit Ben Minich.The Bombers were able to get down the field and into field goal range but the 47 yard attempt from Jake Cengia fell short on the final play.St. Xavier started strong behind first year starter Jack O’Malley at quarterback. A sixty yard completion to WR Jamaal Sharp set up an early field goal and a 3-0 lead.After the Bombers defense held strong, O’Malley found TE Doran Mason for 30 yard touchdown and a 10-0 lead. St. Xavier would close the half with another field goal to lead 13-0 at the half.Lakota West came out in the second half with purpose and things seemed to turn after a fake punt where Minich kept the ball and took it down to the 1 yard line. A block in the back nullified the run but the Firebirds seemed rejuvenated.The West defense would block a Bomber punt setting up a field goal but still trailed 13-3 after three. Bolden found WR Brennan Remy for a 47 yard score halfway through the fourth and after a series of stops, Minich’s score put them ahead for good.NO. 8 LA SALLE 17, NO. 10 COLERAIN 13LaSalle edged rival Colerain by a final score of 17-13 at Cardinal Stadium. The Lancers got on the scoreboard first on a Mattingly-to-Bernecker TD pass and led 10-0 after one quarter of play as Luensman added a field goal.Colerain’s defense did what they could to lock things down from there, but the Cardinals couldn’t take advantage. They fumbled the ball on La Salle’s 2-yard line, lost 20 yards on a play from the Lancers’ 8-yard line, threw an interception in an end zone and fumbled the opening kickoff at the 10-yard line. Those mistakes were simply too much to overcome. This was a defensive battle that saw very little offense and LaSalle was able to put together just enough from Mattingly to pull out the victory.NO. 20 EDGEWOOD , NO. 21 MILFORD 42Milford used a potent passing attack to take down visiting Edgewood Friday night.Quarterback Austin Hardin led the charge for Tom Grippa’s squad.
