Gwyneth’s Nighttime Skin Routine
-
Starting late in the afternoon and moving into nighttime, I’ve been focusing my routine on winding down, eating early, and getting to bed early, which has been amazing for my overall health, digestion, and sleep. I’ve got a longtime bath-taking habit, and my skin-care routine is simple—but powerful in terms of results. My evening routine gets me all nice and relaxed and happy before bed, and it works in the short term—so I’m glowing and ready for the next day—and the longer term, too, with benefits like firming, brightening, less-noticeable wrinkles, and overall healthier-looking skin.

4 P.M.
This is often when I leave work, if I’m at the office (like many businesses, we’ve got a hybrid office-home work model at the moment). It doesn’t take me too long to get home, and I continue working there—calls, emails, etc.—until it’s time to get ready for dinner.
6 or 6:30 P.M.
We like to have long dinners with the kids when we can. Life gets in the way of everyone being there some of the time, but our sacred night is Wednesdays: The whole Faltrow clan, with all four kids, is there. It’s the routine that’s the highlight of my entire week.
7:30 P.M.
I take a therapeutic bath almost every night—it’s 20 minutes I spend chilling by myself. I started this routine in 1998, when I was filming Shakespeare in Love in the UK (they take a lot of baths in Britain), and I still love it. My favorite baths right now are “The Martini,” which we make with pink Himalayan salt and all these incredible botanicals and oils, and the Tubmarine bath from Pursoma, with algae and minerals.

My three-step skin routine starts in the tub or the shower with Microderm and goes from there.
-
STEP 1
GOOPGLOW Microderm exfoliator is one of our absolute bestsellers, and I use it pretty much every night—even though it says on the package to use it just two or three times a week. (You’ve got to be punk rock and do it your own way sometimes.) I love that it’s both a physical and chemical exfoliator. I smooth it on and let it hang out on my skin for a little while to sweep away the dead cells. After a couple minutes, I feel the tingle—that’s the chemical exfoliation working. The beautiful thing about Microderm is that it doesn’t create micro tears in the skin; it’s a powerful but gentle exfoliation that leaves your skin super soft and preps it for any treatments or serums that you put on next.

STEP 2
Next, it’s on to my favorite cream I’ve ever used, GOOPGENES face cream. It works beautifully as a night cream, and of course my dry skin loves it for day, too (that’s where the “All-in-One” comes in). It’s really firming, with nourishing and youth-boosting benefits, and I love the rich, thick texture. Our clinical results speak for themselves with this one—it’s incredible what it can do for your skin.

STEP 3
I use this face oil multiple times a day, including before bed. I’m obsessed. I want to bathe in it. I want to drink it. I have two subscriptions for it going at the moment. It’s been a total game changer for my skin. It’s made with bakuchiol, a natural retinol alternative that’s fantastic for fine lines and wrinkles, and it’s light and absorbs easily, cocooning skin like nothing else. I can’t live without it. Used over the face cream, it’s so good for my dry skin—it seals in all the goodness.

Bonus: The Sunday-Night-Only Club
-
At goop, we have this club—everybody does the GOOPGLOW peel on Sunday nights and sends little videos around. It’s one of our most active products, so you use it on cleansed skin just once a week. (It’s the most powerful exfoliator we make—on nights you do the peel, don’t use any other exfoliating treatments.) I smooth it on and wait for the tingle. If the tingling’s too much, I put on a little face oil or moisturizer to take the intensity down a notch. The glycolic acid goes to work overnight, penetrating deep into your skin to transform it while you sleep. It’s based on those really powerful peels you get at the dermatologist, and it feels like that. It’s not for the faint of heart—it’s spicy—but you get the results you’re looking for. The little pad has a different texture on each side; the softer side is for the face, and the more textured side is for the neck and chest.

8:30 P.M.
Embarrassingly, we’re in bed by about 8:30, and I love to watch TV. I know you’re not supposed to, but I find it very relaxing. For me, it’s a way to lull myself to sleep.
9:30 P.M.
Good night.
