A 10-year-old girl who shot and killed a woman fighting with her mother at their apartment complex’s Memorial Day barbecue was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder.
The girl, who has not been publicly identified, was at the May 30 party in Orlando when her mother, 31-year-old Lakrisha Isaac, got into a loud argument with 41-year-old Lashun Rodgers, allegedly over a social media post, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.
Isaac handed her daughter a backpack and then punched Rodgers, who returned the favor, according to police.
Rodgers’ boyfriend allegedly tried to break up the fight, but failed. That’s when the girl pulled a gun out of the purse and shot twice, killing Rodgers, police said.
“You shouldn’t have messed with my mother!” the girl yelled, witnesses told police.
State Attorney Monique Worrell announced Tuesday that the girl has been arrested, but charges have not yet been formally filed. Worrell also said her office may not decide to press charges at all.
“This shooting is an unimaginable tragedy that defies easy solutions,” she said in a statement, calling it “one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career.”
“Our office will proceed with care, and our primary focus will be on doing whatever we can to support Ms. Rodgers’s family, protect the public, and improve the health of this child going forward. My deepest sympathies and prayers are with Ms. Rodger’s family, her loved ones, and our entire community, as we cope with this unimaginable loss.”
Isaac was already arrested on charges including manslaughter by culpable negligence, aggravated assault with a firearm, child neglect and negligent storage of a firearm.
