A University of Oregon football player who was raised in California died at a popular cliff-diving spot on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Spencer Webb, 22, fell and struck his head at Slide Rock at Lake Creek Falls near Triangle Lake, a popular outdoor recreation spot about 35 miles west of the University of Oregon campus in Eugene.

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement posted on Facebook that it received a report of an injured person at 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies found Webb about 100 yards down a steep trail, the sheriff’s office said. First responders and bystanders administered life-saving measures, but were unable to revive him.

There is no evidence of foul play and his death appears to be accidental, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office did not share the victim’s name, but the Sacramento Bee confirmed the deceased was Webb.

“Webb was a tight end star at Christian Brothers, a Sacramento Bee All-Metro and All-Decade performer who rose above a broken family, raised by an older brother, and who was this summer preparing for his fourth season at the University of Oregon, where he towered as a 6-foot-6 target and personality,” the Bee wrote.

Slide Rock features large rock slabs that form natural slides and dump into a shallow pool. There’s also a swimming hole and cliff jumping, according to the website Eugene Outdoors. The climb up to the jump spots “is more treacherous than the jump and the rocks are usually slippery,” the website said. The sheriff’s office didn’t specify what Webb was doing when he hit his head nor did it say specifically where he was at the outdoor spot.

This is a developing story and more details will be added as they emerge.
