This café in Bangkok is designed with a community-based concept that is sustainable and beautiful. Designed by space+craft with a structural design created by AWDC, this charming building displays what can happen when sustainability is the focus of every element of a design.

Accessibility to all was at the heart of the concept for the space. This café is meant to be a true community building. The idea is to introduce concepts of recycling and green living to everyone who comes here.

Therefore, upcycled milk cartons and glass bottles became an early inspiration for the design of the café. The designers worked with a factory to create re-board, which is a material that is 100% made from used milk cartons. This material was used for the doors, ceiling, tables and chairs. Orange bottles were used to create a warm, rich color tone for the board.

The material matches perfectly with the brick floor, handmade with tiles. Beer bottles were also used throughout the design. Around 600 of them are used in the façade. They were placed in metal rings to create a structure for the building that doubles as a unique, architectural exterior element.

Meanwhile, some of the bottles have been broken and used in the counter and the floor of the bathroom. Some of the walls have bottles mixed into the concrete to create a unique, textured design. Furthermore, used glass bottles were reworked as door knobs, and an old galvanized iron oil tank was reused as a basin counter.

The corner entrance of the building has a courtyard with a large tree and a pet parking spot. The main coffee bar is on the first floor. There’s some retail space in the back of the shop where you can buy used clothing, pet supplies and coffee equipment. The second floor is all for seating with large windows that provide ventilation. All in all, everything here is based on sustainability. There are no straws and no plastic cups. In fact, customers get a discount for bringing their own mug. The roof has solar cell panels so the building can receive renewable energy.
