Atlanta artist Najee Dorsey saw a need for spaces where Black artists could thrive and in 2010 he founded blackartinamerica.com. The online portal quickly took off nationally and internationally, inspiring Dorsey to develop a physical space where artists could show their work and gather in community.

The grand opening of Black Art in America Gallery and Gardens in East Point takes place this weekend, starting with an invitation-only event Friday evening. There’s a ribbon cutting Saturday morning and tours of the gallery and garden Saturday and Sunday, along with performances, panel discussions, artists’ talks and the creation of a new mural by Street Art Revolution.

Earlier this year Dorsey talked with ArtsATL’s Gail O’Neill about the new art center. “Stories untold are stories forgotten. We want to be a magnet for those who are interested in Black visual culture. We want to be a magnet for those who are interested in learning more and getting engaged. We want to celebrate our culture in an international city. Atlanta is where we can add a lot of value and that’s why we’re here!”

All events are free.

A lot has changed since the Georgia Council for the Arts developed its 2017-22 strategic plan five years ago. It’s time now for a new plan. Earlier this year, the council held town hall meetings in Atlanta, Tifton and Savannah to explore what artists, arts organizations, cities, schools and libraries are facing. This month the council has scheduled two virtual town hall meetings: June 21 from 10-11:30 a.m. and June 22 from 1-2:30 p.m.

According to the council’s website, these are the last two opportunities for Georgians to offer their input. Artists, arts organizations, teachers, business owners and anyone engaged in the arts are invited to participate. The result of these discussions will form the backbone of the council’s new post-pandemic strategic plan. Registration required.
