Santa Rosa police arrested the parents of a 15-month-old girl after the child was found dead in a home near a substance that is likely fentanyl, officials said

On Monday, the Santa Rosa Police Department responded to a report of the unresponsive toddler in the 800 block of Sonoma Avenue, just a few blocks from downtown. On scene, first responders performed life-saving measures. The toddler was transported to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead, a report from the police department said.

The child was found near what officers suspected was fentanyl. Detectives obtained a search warrant and located fentanyl paraphernalia and packaged and unpacked suspected fentanyl throughout the main bedroom, including in the bed the toddler shared with her parents, police said.

Police identified the parents as Santa Rosa residents Evan Frostick, 26, and Madison Bernard, 23. They were arrested on suspicion of cruelty to a child likely to produce great bodily injury or death. Officials said an autopsy, including a toxicology test, will be complete by the end of the week. Depending on the result, police may seek additional charges.
