The May 4 letter “Religion used to inspire civic good” forgets a serious challenge/problem for all religions, regardless of their age, origin and founders: The pastoral application of their beliefs and teachings is left up to mortal men and women.

It’s made more difficult by the complexities of cultural shifts in societal attitudes and practices with the passage of time and change in values. A move too far in either direction causes problems, either losing the definition of what it means to be a follower, or eroding the founders’ mandates.

Finding balance between justice and mercy is the challenge for the ages, especially in today’s 24/7 media and communications.
