(WISCONSIN) – On May 2, 2022, an initial majority draft opinion circulated within the U.S. Supreme Court and obtained by POLITICO revealed the Supreme Court is planning to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision which guarantees federal constitutional protections of abortion rights. Wisconsin already has severe restrictions on accessing legal abortions, but if overturned, abortion will become a felony per a state law passed in 1849 which includes no exception for cases of rape or incest. The implications of this decision would have a devastating impact on women and families living in Wisconsin, and even more so on immigrant communities and women of color.
In response to the threat of stripping federal constitutional protections of abortion rights, a delegation of 11 Voces members attended and participated in a national day of action on Saturday, May 14th. The “Bans Off Our Bodies” rally was organized by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and others, to send a message loud and clear: “All people deserve access to the abortion care they need, when they need it, in the community they live in and trust.” The Wisconsin rally was held at the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison.
Voces de la Frontera (VDLF) proudly joined this national day of action in recognition that abortion care is a fundamental human right and as such, an immigrant rights issue. Additionally, data collected by the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice suggests 81% of Latinx voters agree that “every woman should have coverage for a full range of pregnancy-related care, including abortion”.
In a public statement, Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of VDLF, said,
“The decision to have an abortion is a profoundly personal and complex decision. It is up to each woman to make that decision based on her life circumstances. No one should make that decision for her.
Reproductive rights are immigrant rights. Reproductive rights are workers rights. If abortion is made illegal, women with more financial means will always have access to a safe and legal abortion because they can travel to another state or country to get the health care they need.
If abortion is made illegal, it is low-income women and undocumented immigrant women who will suffer the most; dying at higher rates from illegal dangerous abortions, facing criminalization and imprisonment, and forced unwanted pregnancies while battling marginalization and poverty.
In Wisconsin, undocumented women do not have access to driver licenses, health insurance and face the fear of deportation. Undocumented women crossing the border or in detention centers face the danger of sexual abuse because of their status.
All women regardless of their income or immigration status should have the right to a safe and legal abortion. There can be no equality and dignity for women in society, without the fundamental right of women to control their own reproduction and determine their own future.
The same far-right politicians who are blocking immigration reform with a path to citizenship are also attacking women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, voting rights and are passing laws that make the rich richer at the expense of working people.
The same people that want to force women to have children are furiously condemning the Biden Administration for providing baby food to the children of refugees in the southern border. They want babies to be born and as soon as they are born they are denying them food and shelter. Where is the morality in that?
As a movement we stand together against these hateful forces, in the streets and in the ballot box.”

(WISCONSIN) – El 2 de mayo de 2022, una opinión mayoritaria circuló dentro de la Corte Suprema de los EE. UU. fue obtenida por POLITICO y reveló que la Corte Suprema planea anular la histórica decisión Roe v. Wade que garantiza las protecciones constitucionales federales del derecho al aborto. Wisconsin ya tiene restricciones severas para acceder a abortos legales, pero si se anula, el aborto se convertirá en un delito grave según una ley estatal aprobada en 1849 que no incluye excepciones para casos de violación o incesto. Las implicaciones de esta decisión tendrían un impacto devastador para las mujeres y las familias que viven en Wisconsin, y aún más en las comunidades inmigrantes y para las mujeres de color.

La manifestación “Bans Off Our Bodies” fue organizada por Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund y otros, para enviar un mensaje alto y claro: “Todas las personas merecen acceso a la recursos de aborto que necesitan, cuando los necesitan, en la comunidad que viven y que confían”. La manifestación de Wisconsin se llevó a cabo en el Capitolio del Estado de Wisconsin en Madison.
Voces de la Frontera (VDLF) se unió con orgullo a este día nacional de acción en reconocimiento de que el acceso al aborto es un derecho humano fundamental y, como tal, un problema de derechos de los inmigrantes. Además, los datos recopilados por el Instituto Nacional de Latinas para la Justicia Reproductiva sugieren que el 81% de los votantes latinos están de acuerdo en que “todas las mujeres deberían tener cobertura completa de atención relacionada con el embarazo, incluyendo el aborto”.
En una declaración pública durante la manifestación, Christine Neumann-Ortiz, la directora ejecutiva de VDLF dijo:
“La decisión de abortar es una decisión profundamente personal y compleja. Depende de cada mujer tomar esa decisión en función de las circunstancias de su vida. Nadie debería tomar esa decisión por ella.
Los derechos reproductivos son derechos de los inmigrantes. Los derechos reproductivos son derechos de los trabajadores. Si el aborto se ilegaliza, las mujeres con más recursos económicos siempre tendrán acceso a un aborto seguro y legal porque pueden viajar a otro estado o país para obtener la atención médica que necesitan.
Si el aborto se hace ilegal, son las mujeres de bajos ingresos y las inmigrantes indocumentadas las que más sufrirán; muriendo en tasas más altas por abortos peligrosos ilegales, enfrentando criminalización y encarcelamiento, y embarazos no deseados forzados mientras luchan contra la marginación y la pobreza.
En Wisconsin, las mujeres indocumentadas no tienen acceso a licencias de conducir, seguro médico y enfrentan el temor de ser deportadas. Las mujeres indocumentadas que cruzan la frontera o se encuentran en centros de detención enfrentan el peligro de abuso sexual debido a su estatus.
Todas las mujeres, independientemente de sus ingresos o estatus migratorio, deben tener derecho a un aborto seguro y legal. No puede haber igualdad y dignidad para las mujeres en la sociedad, sin el derecho fundamental de las mujeres a controlar su propia reproducción y determinar su propio futuro.
Los mismos políticos de extrema derecha que están bloqueando la reforma migratoria con un camino hacia la ciudadanía también están atacando los derechos de las mujeres, los derechos LGBTQ, el derecho al voto y están aprobando leyes que enriquecen a los ricos a expensa de los trabajadores.
Las mismas personas que quieren obligar a las mujeres a tener hijos están condenando furiosamente a la Administración de Biden por proporcionar comida para bebés a los hijos de los refugiados en la frontera del sur. Quieren que nazcan bebés y tan pronto como nacen les niegan comida y refugio.
¿Dónde está la moralidad en eso?
Como movimiento, nos mantenemos unidos contra estas fuerzas odiosas, en las calles y en las urnas”.
