Gov. Hochul celebrated becoming a grandmother as her son and daughter-in-law welcomed their first baby daughter on Saturday.
“Welcome to the world, Sofia! My son Billy and daughter-in-law Christina are going to be the best parents,” Hochul said. “This new grandma couldn’t be happier.”
The governor Sunday tweeted a photo of herself beaming as she held the newborn.
Hochul traveled to Washington D.C. on Sunday to meet the new addition and returned to Albany later in the evening.
“Exciting news — Governor Hochul has become a grandma!” said Hazel Crampton-Hays, a spokeswoman for Hochul.
A former lieutenant governor, Hochul became governor last year after former Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned amid a serial sexual harassment scandal.
She is running for a first full term and is leading in polls over two main Democratic primary rivals, New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) who represents Long Island.
