Comedians can use happenings on which to base their presentations, couching them in a humorous vein. That is OK, and, if done correctly, will elicit a laugh from the audience.
However, the comic must investigate the source. Did Chris Rock know that Jada Pinkett Smith’s physical appearance was due to a medical issue? If not, he should have.
If he did and still made that comment, he got less than what he deserved. You don’t make fun of someone’s troubles.
I remember in 2016 when a platform speaker sought laughter by trying to imitate a person with a disability.
Should Will Smith apologize? Yes, for his actions, although taken impetuously. Should Rock apologize? Maybe he is the one who should resign from the Academy.
