8 States Where Companies Must Reveal How Much Jobs Pay

One of the most nerve-wracking parts of a job hunt is wondering what type of salary a prospective employer might pay you.

In some states, you no longer have to guess.

Several states now require employers to make information about pay ranges available to current or prospective employees. Here are the places that place a premium on salary transparency.

California

Average hourly pay rate for workers in this state: $37.44
Average hours worked per week: 34.5
Average weekly earnings: $1,292

When you apply for a job in California, the employer must provide you with a pay range for the role upon request even before you interview.

Companies with 15 or more workers must include the pay scale with any job they post.

Colorado

Average hourly pay rate for workers in this state: $34.47
Average hours worked per week: 33.3
Average weekly earnings: $1,148

In Colorado, employers must provide a pay range for all posted jobs. In addition, a summary of all employment benefits must be included in the listing.

Connecticut

Average hourly pay rate for workers in this state: $34.67

In Connecticut, the wage range for a job must be provided upon the job candidate’s request, or before the job is offered to the applicant.

Companies also must provide wage ranges for a position when employees are hired or change roles within the company.

Maryland

In Maryland, any time someone applies for a job and requests a pay range, it must be provided to that person.

Nevada

In Nevada, as soon as an applicant finishes an interview for a position, the employer must provide a range of pay to that person.

Pay ranges also must be given upon request to workers who meet key criteria and apply for potential promotions or transfers to a new position.

New York

As of September 2023, employers with at least four workers must provide pay ranges when advertising a job, promotion or opportunity for transfer.

Rhode Island
