SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) –State officials are warning the public to be extra careful this weekend as elevated grass fire warnings are being seen throughout South Dakota.

Recently a large grassfire in north-central South Dakota shows just how quickly flames can spread in these dry conditions.

The fire burned around 1,000 acres Friday north of Highway 2-12, in Dewey County, west of Gettysburg.

The Gettysburg Fire Department says the fire was sparked by a wheel bearing going out. Crews from several nearby communities responded and have been able to get the fire under control. They’ll be be monitoring the area for any flare-ups.

Yankton County officials also want people to know there is a burn ban in place over the weekend due to the extreme fire index.
