A woman who reportedly told cops she was pregnant was shot Friday by police in Kansas City, Mo., leaving her seriously wounded, officials said.
Two officers who were investigating a report of a stolen car fired their guns as the woman attempted to flee the scene on foot, Sgt. Andy Bell of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said Friday.
The woman has been identified as Leonna M. Hale, 26, of Kansas, Bell confirmed to the Daily News on Tuesday. Bell said Friday that she was hospitalized and in stable condition.
A witness told the Kansas City Star that the woman was shot multiple times and had put her hands up before being shot. The witness told the newspaper that the woman told officers she was pregnant.
“We are aware of a rumor about the issue of pregnancy,” Bell said in a statement obtained by The News. “The rumor is just a rumor to the best of our knowledge. This information is protected under HIPPA.”
Bell said Friday that a suspect handgun was recovered near a vehicle, but officials have not said whether Hale had a weapon at the time of the shooting.
A male suspect said to be in the car with Hale that night also attempted to flee the scene and was taken into custody, according to Bell, who said the male was unharmed but hospitalized due to “an unrelated medical issue.”
The officers from Kansas City, Mo., who fired their weapons were responding to a dispatch from police in Kansas City, Kansas, regarding an “alleged armed carjacking,” Bell said Friday.
The incident occurred after officers spotted a car that matched the description of a stolen vehicle, Bell said.
