INDIANAPOLIS — A woman was killed in a shooting on the near east side of Indianapolis late Monday night.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 1800 block of North Rural Street around 10:56 p.m. to investigate a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult female with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds inside a residence.

IMPD initially reported that the victim was transported from the scene to a local hospital in critical condition. During a subsequent media briefing, police clarified that medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

IMPD has confirmed that it detained an adult male person of interest at the scene. Police are still trying to determine what relationship, if any, the person of interest and suspect had with each other. Police transported the person of interest to the IMPD Homicide Office for questioning after the shooting.

Police confirmed that the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency and the Marion County Coroner’s Office are assisting detectives with their investigation. Investigators are currently trying to figure out exactly what instigated the shooting.

As of 11:47 p.m. Monday, detectives did not believe the shooting posed any active threat to the community.
