INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has arrested a woman in relation to the death of 47-year-old James Milton Jr. in December 2022 on the near northeast side of Indianapolis.
According to a news release from the department, 40-year-old Montez Craig was arrested on Monday in the 6100 block of N. Keystone Ave.
On Dec. 11, 2022, officers with the department’s north district responded to the 3600 block of North Lasalle Street on a welfare check. The release said when officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as Milton, inside a vehicle with injuries “consistent with trauma.” Milton was pronounced dead at the scene.
As officials investigated the incident, IMPD identified and detained Craig as a person of interest in the case. The release said Craig was released pending further investigation. On Friday, Craig was charged with murder and she was taken into custody on Monday.
Once Craig was in custody, IMPD reportedly conducted a separate investigation involving her and a man she was with at the time, identified by police as 42-year-old Julian Lee. The release said a K9 conducted an open-air sniff around the vehicle that Craig and Lee were in and officers later located cocaine, marijuana as well as reported evidence of drug dealing.
The release said that Craig and Lee were arrested for dealing in and possession of cocaine, as well as dealing in and possession of marijuana.
