WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The West Lafayette Police Department arrested a man on Thursday for a shooting that took place a little over a mile from Purdue University’s campus.

According to the WLPD, officers were called around 3:20 p.m. to a parking lot near the 100 block of Howard Avenue, on the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim suffering gunshot wounds to the leg and head. WLPD said they administered aid to the victim, who was later transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses were then able to provide police with a description of the suspect, as well as a direction he may have been heading.

That is what led WLPD officers — with assistance from the Purdue University Police Department, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department and the Lafayette Police Department — to head to the Waterfront Apartments, located on the 300 block of Brown St.

There, WLPD said a Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Deputy discovered a fleeing suspect and detained him without incident. Per WLPD, a handgun was also recovered nearby, which was the weapon involved in the shooting.

This resulted in the arrest of 36-year-old Dontrae Alexander of West Lafayette. He is preliminarily charged with aggravated battery (Level 3 Felony).

Police said they believe an argument between Alexander and the victim led to the shooting.

If convicted, Alexander could face up to sixteen years in prison. A mugshot has not been provided at this time.
