The Perins Peak fire, burning northwest of Durango, is now 36% contained, fire officials said on Friday.
The fire, which started on Tuesday, has burned 102 acres on Bureau of Land Management and Colorado Parks and Wildlife land about 1.5 miles outside the southwestern Colorado city in La Plata County.
On Friday morning, helicopters shuttled fire crews to the top of the fire area while other crews hiked into the bottom area, fire officials said. Aircraft drops were carried out Friday to support the ground crews as they continue to work on increasing containment.
A pre-evacuation order has been lifted for the County Road 206 and County Road 208 areas. A pre-evacuation notice for the Rock Ridge subdivision remains if effect.
A red flag warning for critical fire danger has been posted, by the National Weather Service, for the area until 10 p.m. Friday. Another red flag warning is posted from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday. Winds gusting up to 50 mph with low humidity and dry conditions are in the local weather forecast both days. There’s a 30% chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon.
About 140 personnel are fighting the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
