SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO)– If you have taken a stroll through downtown Sioux Falls recently, you may have noticed several people wearing orange T-shirts.

Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere Inc. or CARE, according to its website, seeks to end poverty and social injustice by fighting world hunger, responding to emergencies, and empowering women and girls.

Jake Camps, a passerby that spoke to the CARE volunteers, said he was told by CARE volunteers that they were fundraising along the street to spread awareness and seek donations for their cause, and were overall very friendly. He added that the agent he spoke to said they had been in town since Sunday.

CARE volunteers carry portable tables and set those on the sidewalk or other public area with information about the organization. Volunteers do not take cash donations.

Sioux Falls Police spokesman Sam Clemens said during Friday’s briefing that non-profits do not need a permit for this type of activity.

CARE is a non-profit organization that has existed since 1945 and dates back to World War II.

KELOLAND News contacted the national CARE but it did not return a message. Also, several CARE volunteers working in Sioux Falls declined to comment.

CARE is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The organization must not be operated or organized for the benefit of private interests, and no part of a section 501(c)(3) organization’s net earnings may inure to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual.
