SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Every year, the Game Fish and Parks sets up a map so people can track the changing fall leaves across the state.
The 2024 South Dakota Parks Foliage Tracker is now available. Different GF&P departments at state parks can submit photos, descriptions and the color change status for trees in the area.
Apart from Spearfish Canyon, most of South Dakota is seeing minimal and patchy color change.
“Summac turning red,” submitted SDGFP Trails Sept. 25. “Some of the ash trees still have yellow on them. The smaller cottonwood and ash trees are losing their leaves.”
The eastern side of the state is expected to peak in mid-October, however, the lack of rain this summer is causing some places to change early.
